Tennessee grocery store reopens weeks after mass shooting

COLLIERVILLE, Tennessee (AP) – A Tennessee grocery store that was closed for weeks after a man shot one person and injured 14 others reopened on Wednesday.

The Kroger store in the upscale Memphis suburb of Collierville opened its doors to customers with $ 4 million in renovations, company spokeswoman Teresa Dickerson said.

Law enforcement officials said UK Thang killed one person and injured 14 others in the Kroger before taking his own life on September 23. Thang, 29, was the franchise owner of a sushi counter inside the store.

The victims included 10 employees and five customers, police said. Thang had been asked to quit his job at the grocery store earlier today.

Police said Thang acted alone and did not appear to be targeting anyone in particular. The entire filming was completed within minutes when first responders invaded the stage.

WREG-TV reported that the Collierville High School band, football team and cheerleaders attended the reopening. A garden of remembrance has been set up outside the store in honor of Olivia King, who was killed in the shooting.

Support effort helps military members return home for the holidays

LYNCHBURG, Tennessee (AP) – The Tennessee distillery that produces Jack Daniel’s whiskey is partnering with a military support group to help service members and their families return home for the holidays.

More than 1,700 soldiers and relatives will return home thanks to “Operation Ride Home”, organizers said. This is the largest number of participants in the history of the program.

In its 11th year, the program provides financial assistance to active-duty junior enlisted military personnel and their families to travel to the homes of their loved ones across the country. The Jack Daniel Distillery teams up with the Armed Services YMCA to offer assistance.

Members of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard were assisted to visit each state.

“We are absolutely delighted that they can reunite with their loved ones this year,” said Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller. “Providing financial assistance to get them home is the least we can do.”

Jack Daniel’s is the flagship brand of Brown-Forman, based in Kentucky.

Disgraced former Tennessee president won’t run

FRANKLIN, Tennessee (AP) – State Representative Glen Casada, who resigned as Speaker of the House in 2019 amid scandals after holding the post only a few months, announced on Wednesday that he was not would not represent in the state legislature.

Casada, a Franklin Republican, has been the state legislator since 2003 and has also served as caucus chair and House majority leader.

“This decision comes after much prayer and reflection,” Casada said in a statement. “I am blessed and grateful to have served Williamson County and achieved so many goals for my constituents, but it is time to open a new chapter in public service.”

Casada noted several accomplishments, including his sponsorship of a constitutional amendment to ban personal income tax as well as numerous conservative, anti-abortion and pro-business initiatives.

He resigned his leadership position in August 2019 after revelations he had exchanged sexually explicit texts about women with his former chief of staff years ago. Despite this, he was easily re-elected to the House in 2020.

Other controversies included the cocaine use of an aide in a legislative office years ago and allegations of forging emails to trick a young black activist – something Casada and the aide both denied. .

Casada initially resisted calls from inside his GOP caucus to step down as speaker. However, as the scandals persisted and the caucus voted they no longer trusted his leadership, he finally agreed.

Casada was also one of several Republican lawmakers whose homes and legislative offices were raided by federal agents earlier this year. Federal authorities have released few details on what they are looking for.
